Assisted living and other forms of supportive housing are specifically designed for those who need extra help in their day-to-day lives, but who do not require the 24-hour skilled nursing care found in traditional nursing homes. Residents of assisted living facilities generally require help with one or more activities of daily living, such as help with eating, toileting, bathing, etc.

Nursing homes provide round-the-clock skilled care, both for short-term rehabilitation and long-term care.
