What are common misconceptions about Internet use by senior Americans?

Several myths exist regarding older Americans and their use of the Internet. These myths include:

  • A belief that there are few older users online, or that older people simply do not use, or want to use, the Internet.
  • A belief that older users are an Internet audience restricted by limited budgets, limited interests and limited computer skills.
  • A belief that there is no need to accommodate the different needs of younger and older audiences.

In reality, however, Internet use among the aging population is growing. While some non-Internet users cite high levels of intimidation and a lack of understanding of how a computer and the Internet may benefit them, many seniors recognize the benefits of computers, especially in the areas of employability and socialization. In fact, poor web site design is the leading complaint of seniors, leading to frustration, anxiety and confusion for the older population, as opposed to the stereotypical lack of access or desire to use the Internet that many people assume of seniors.
